Two years ago

Two years ago tonight, Chris and I were soaking in our newborn son, Ian Matthew.  He was born via c-section after a looooong day of not much dilating and a few scares with a dropped heart rate.  He weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz. and was 21 inches long.  He had a serious furrow of the brow and big brown eyes and he was perfect.

I look back on video we took of the first few weeks of Ian's life and Chris looks so happy.  He is tan and fit and so alive looking.  How maddening it is to me that he wasn't here today to take Ian to the fire station for a visit or play in the park.  Father and son deserved those precious moments together.  They deserved to share so many more moments over their lifetimes.

Mommy did the best she could to make today's birthday a good one.  Ian was treated like a little prince (even while whining, "MINE" numerous times throughout the day...yes TWO has definitely arrived!).  Thanks to Papa and Busia for arranging the visit to the fire station and to Tante for spending the day with us.  We made the best of it.  Happy Birthday, Mr. Man.

This is us without you, Chris.  Today, Ian missed you.

  2. I know this is a hard time for you and your family. My husband passed away from GBM back in 1/08 and at the time our boys were 3yo and 6yo. Take one day at a time and make tons of memories with your kids. My kids make life so much easier to get thru. Just know that you are not alone. Will keep you in my thoughts.

  3. Wendy...it is heartbreaking to think of all the father/son moments that Ian will miss. I am deeply touched by your courage and strength as you continue on the path without your beloved husband and friend. May God shine his light on you always.

  4. I think you did a wonderful job! My middle daughter just turned 9 last week. She had 5 little girls spend the night. I was trying to make it special for her too, since her daddy was not here. :) Hang in there.

  5. All of the Knudsens send Happy Birthday wishes and hugs to Ian on the celebration of his 2nd year! We are thinking of all of you and wish Chris could be here as we all knew him, to enjoy all of the momentous as well as ordinary days with you. As difficult as it is, Wendy, you are doing a beautiful job creating wonderful memories with your children while keeping their daddy's memory alive. He is surely close by and very proud of all of you!

We send our love and support...God bless you.
